Geo Drilling Apprenticeship
The Geo Drilling Apprenticeship is a two-year apprenticeship delivered by IT Carlow, with Geoscience Ireland the lead industry partner. Successful graduates are awarded with a QQI Level 6 Higher Certificate in Science in Geo Drilling, with the second cohort of Geo Drilling Apprentices having just completed the work-based learning portion of the course. There are eight apprentices taking part in the second intake, who joined 13 apprentices from year one. All members of the second cohort returned to the classroom in September for 2nd year.
The first class of apprentices have now successfully completed the programme, and their graduation ceremony will take place in the coming months. The next intake of apprentices will begin in January 2022, and there is already strong interest in the course from potential recruits and employers.
A programmatic review of the course content by IT Carlow has recently been successfully completed, with positive feedback on the course from external examiners.
We are pleased to announce that the Health & Safety Authority has agreed to nominate Greg Murphy, Inspector with the Forestry, Mines & Quarrying Unit to the Geo Drilling Steering Committee. Greg brings considerable experience to the group, and will add insights as to how the Safety, Health & Welfare Act of 2005 might apply to the Apprenticeship and its wider applications.
IMQS Award
This year, for the first time, an award of two IMQS medals will be presented to the best new apprentice driller and the best experienced driller on the apprenticeship scheme.
