Alan graduated from Camborne School of Mines with a BEng (Hons) in Mining Engineering. He currently holds the position of Drill and Blast Engineer in the Production Department of Boliden Tara Mines.

He is a past President of the IMQS (Irish Mining and Quarrying Society) and represents Ireland on the Council of EFEE (European Federation of Explosives Engineers).
